The Community Festival’s Concealed Connections To Wexner’s Power And Influence
Comfest, Central Ohio’s All-Volunteer-Run Fest Since 1972, Persists Through Untenable Ties To Billionaire Les Wexner

On June 26-27-28th, the Columbus Community Festival – also known as Comfest – returns to its longtime home at Goodale Park in the Short North. Long recognized as the country’s largest all-volunteer festival and a bastion of Progressive activism, the festival and the 501(c)(3) charitable organization which produces it are in financial straits and at a controversial crossroads. In early 2026 preceding this year’s festival production, several team and/or committee heads departed their positions under contentious circumstances for varying reasons, and a number of stage managers abstained from volunteering this year in solidarity.
In February this author – a twenty-year Comfest volunteer, long-time Entertainment Committee co-head and former Tech Committee head & co-head – discovered and revealed multiple decades-old ties connecting the Community Festival to Lesley Wexner and Jeffrey Epstein. While some of these articles were published in 2019 and 2020 – one article directly from a first-hand source – some of these direct connections were only revealed in January & February 2026 upon the Justice Department’s declassification and release of the Epstein files. At the same time, long-time Comfest organizers who are self-described “top moderators on Reddit” commented and posted disinformation about Epstein and the Reddit account associated with Ghislaine Maxwell in the Justice Department files while removing related posts, while one of the two commented in an Epstein thread that this author was banned from Reddit for associating Maxwell with the maxwellhill Redditor account.
The Columbus Community Festival’s connections to billionaire Lesley Wexner – as well as a direct relationship with Jeffrey Epstein – exist through organizations which originally provided to the first Comfest and maintain strong relationships with the organization to this day: the Columbus Free Press, and the Hillel chapter at the Ohio State University where the first festival physically took place.
What Are The Origins of Comfest? – WOSU Public Media, 2022
(1) Comfest Honored Activist Bob Fitrakis; Les Wexner, and Jeffrey Epstein
The first connection between Comfest and both Les Wexner and Jeffrey Epstein exists through Bob Fitrakis. As well as editor of the Columbus Free Press, Fitrakis has been a long-time Community Festival organizer who was honored by the festival in 2008 as Comfest Honored Activist. While Fitrakis is also credited as the first journalist to investigate Epstein’s connections to organized crime in central Ohio, previously published articles indicate a past professional relationship between Attorney Fitrakis and Mr. Wexner… if not Epstein himself. When Epstein was arrested in July of 2019, Business Insider reported:
“Epstein also had a hand in helping Wexner build a model town in New Albany, Ohio, through his development firm The New Albany Co. Epstein invested a few million dollars of capital into the project and became a partner in the company, according to a 2002 article in New York magazine. …
Back in 2002, New York magazine spoke to Bob Fitrakis, a Columbus-based investigative journalist who had written extensively about Wexner, about Epstein’s role in the project. Fitrakis said that before Epstein got involved, the financial preparations and groundwork for development were ‘a total mess. Epstein cleaned everything up, as well as serving Wexner in other capacities…’.”
Bob Fitrakis himself has written voluminous articles along with two books on this topic, while wearing several hats as professor, attorney, political candidate, and investigative journalist. In a June 18th, 2020 article titled Jeffrey Epstein: There’s much more to the story, Fitrakis wrote:
“Not many people know that the infamous Jeffrey Epstein spent a lot of time in Columbus in the 1990s and owned the second most valuable house in Franklin County (where Columbus resides), in the plush Stepford suburb known as New Albany. I investigated central Ohio billionaire Les Wexner’s and Jeff Epstein’s ties to the intelligence community more than 20 years ago.”
Indeed, not many people knew. Despite his extensive reporting on both Lesley Wexner and Jeffrey Epstein, Fitrakis’ direct relationship with one or both co-conspirators remains murky at best. In 2019, a comprehensive investigation into Epstein conducted by Medium.com reported:
“In 1988, Epstein worked with Wexner on the New Albany Property Company, where he assisted him with his finances to transform rural New Albany to a residential area. During this, a man named Bob Fitrakis assisted Wexner with his finances, and Marshall Rose worked with Epstein during the projects. Epstein’s businesses would be situated at the Villard House in Manhattan, NY; in New Albany, OH; and at St. Thomas Island.”
Bob Fitrakis’ involvement with the Community Festival began around the same time in 1990, according to the Comfest 2008 Program Guide. The festival guide recognized Fitrakis as that year’s Honored Activist, noting his frequent participation as speaker, emcee and co-host of Free Press Salons at the festival. Fitrakis’ political clout increased over the decades as he unsuccessfully ran as an independent candidate for Governor of Ohio in 2006, Lieutenant Governor in 2014, and Franklin County Prosecutor in 2016.
How To Organize A Community Festival (1973)
(2) Wexner; Epstein; and Comfest’s Oldest Benefactor, OSU Hillel
In 1972, the first Columbus Community Festival took place on the lawn of the Hillel fraternity, adjoining the Ohio State University campus. OSU Hillel has maintained strong connections to Comfest over the decades as many original Comfest organizers are of Jewish faith and maintain strong connections to their Israeli roots, as several had emigrated from Israel. As an affiliated dance troupe the OSU Hillel Israeli Dancers have communicated in successive years while requesting preferential performance scheduling in annual emails to bands@comfest, there “wouldn’t be Comfest without us.”
Financial support to the local Hillel chapter is encouraged by donations to its stand-alone 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, self-stated as “fully dependent on the support of the community.” In the late 1980’s, the board of trustees once again saw need for a new building to house the Hillel Foundation. According to a 2011 article published by the Columbus Jewish Historical Society:
In 1990, the OSU Hillel commenced a large fundraising campaign, which included a presentation to the Wexner Foundation, owned by Leslie Wexner… The OSU Hillel was not a stranger to requesting funds from the Columbus community – it was the first Hillel to create a community-based endowment fund.
The efforts of many volunteer solicitors and the Hillel staff paid off. Once enough money was pledged to the Foundation, the building of the Wexner Hillel Foundation began.
Dedicated in 1996, Hillel’s Ohio State Wexner Jewish Student Center promotes Israel awareness, education and advocacy, while also providing students with registration for Birthright Israel.
Around the same time, Comfest incidentally started its own community Grants program by way of the festival’s own 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Since 1997, the Community Festival has given out over $700,000 according to the Grants page on comfest.com. Its largest singular ‘donation’ has been provided not to the overall community, but to endowments in the amount of $242,597+, with far less transparency provided to the community than than the lesser grants provided to community organization grant recipients.
As Comfest organizers – including this author – began preparations for this year’s Community Festival in early 2026, Unredacted Epstein files and planned deposition thrust Jewish philanthropist Leslie Wexner back into spotlight, The Forward published in February. In this article, it was reported that “Wexner later granted Epstein power of attorney beginning in 1991, and federal records describe how Epstein used that authority in property and other transactions.”
The Statement of Leslie H. Wexner Submitted to the Committee On Oversight And Government Reform, United States House of Representatives February 18, 2026 included the following paragraphs:
“As my financial resources and time demands continued to grow, I formally hired Epstein to manage my personal finances. Because my public company and other duties required my full attention, I provided Epstein with a power of attorney so he could execute transactions quickly, without constantly requiring my signature…
What is so clear only now is that Epstein lived a double life. He was clever, diabolical, and a master manipulator. He was meticulous in revealing to me only glimpses into the life in which he was a sophisticated financial guru who consulted with heads of state, high-ranking politicians, royalty, university presidents, professors, CEOs, musicians, and other luminaries.”
Conclusively according to these statements, Jeffrey Epstein had power of attorney and financial control over Wexner’s foundation around the same time that OSU Hillel’s presentation to the Wexner Foundation resulted in the Wexner Hillel Foundation and its buildings constructed at the time. The February news confirming that Leslie Herbert Wexner was an unindicted co-conspirator in the Epstein investigation has had long-lasting repercussions on college campuses from Ohio State to Harvard University, where there are fervent ongoing protests to remove the Wexner name from university and hospital buildings.
Also recently, Dropsite News expanded on Epstein’s relationship with Wexner and his foundations, while separately providing context for Fitrakis’ own reporting on the subjects. In the December 2025 article “’Ask Jeffrey’: Epstein Ran Wexner’s Pro-Israel Philanthropy Machine, Emails Reveal” Dropsite reported:
“Since 1983, the Wexner Foundation has contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to Israel-linked charitable causes, quietly underwriting flagship pro-Israel institutions in America…
“Under Epstein’s financial stewardship, and after his departure, the Wexner Foundation bankrolled pro-Israel charities like college Hillels and free ‘birthright’ trips. These programs had a common mission of teaching young, diasporic Jews to define their religious identity by their connection to the modern state of Israel founded in 1948.
For decades, the foundation also funded the operations of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, including the Wexner Israel Fellowship, which sent Israeli government officials to Harvard on full scholarships. The tens of millions of dollars donated by the Foundation made Epstein himself a powerful player at Harvard. The relationship between Harvard and the Wexner family ultimately ended not because of Epstein’s 2008 conviction, but after a falling out over the university’s refusal, under pressure, to sufficiently crack down on protests in 2023 against Israel’s genocide in the Gaza Strip.”
Regarding Wexner’s sphere of power and influence of lobbying for Israel, this again is a subject which Fitrakis has already provided context on. Amidst the war in Iraq in 2003, future Comfest Honored Activist Fitrakis published “The Wexner War” in the Columbus Free Press which observed:
“In 1998, the Wall Street Journal reported that Wexner was part of the ‘Mega Group,’ a loosely organized club of 20 of the nation’s wealthiest and most influential Jewish businessmen.” The Mega Group meets purportedly to discuss ‘philanthropy,’ but others have speculated that their charitable interests are often a cover for lobbying activities on behalf of Israel.”
However, this article is supposed to be about a Community Festival. Why would Ohio’s richest man, with wealth estimated at over nine billion dollars, take interest in a local Columbus music festival?
Exhibit A: The Creekside Blues and Jazz Festival presented by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (event title sponsor)
Name recognition. Power. Influence. Community relations. Marketing and promotion for the Wexner Medical Center, where Mark Landon, a physician and professor at OSU and the chair of the obstetrics and gynecology department, received quarterly payments of thousands of dollars from Epstein in the early 2000s.
Unlike the Creekside Blues and Jazz Festival and most central Ohio festivals, the Columbus Community Festival is stated to have no corporate sponsors and is all-volunteer-driven. While only the organization’s treasurer is paid meagerly according to its bylaws, he also vied for a seat on Columbus City Council and was rumored under consideration for a vacated council seat. Other organizers have run for local offices, and the festival’s current spokesperson has served a dual role as spokesman for the Central Ohio Transit Authority.

The core of its production logistics team has monetized their festival-building skills over the years. The Build-a-Fest team of multiple Comfest organizers receives income to produce multiple sponsored festivals around Columbus using limited liability companies, with volunteerism often a charitable write-off for various organizations. Senior Comfest organizers often meet with city officials and police liaisons not only to ensure the safety of and permitting for the festival, but to curry favor for the permitting for all the other festivals for which they are paid to produce for personal gain.
Perhaps then, it is a not a coincidence and is no surprise that the Community Festival is no longer an anti-war festival. Comfest notably began as a fierce protest to the Vietnam War, followed by fervent outcries against the War in Iraq in the mid-2000s, highlighted by Jello Biafra’s rallying cry against President George W. Bush on the Bozo Stage in 2004. Flash-forward to 2026: Comfest’s schedule and program guide contains zero anti-war messaging, no organized protests of the U.S. and Israel’s joint war in the Middle East, and most senior organizers refuse to acknowledge the genocide in Gaza conducted by the I.D.F. of the country many of them originally emigrated from.
(3) The Reddit Moderator Connection: maxwellhill; DoremusJessup; AngelaMotorman
This exposé uncovers the connections between three long-established Reddit moderator accounts; two of which are confirmed to belong to senior Comfest organizers and a third account long associated with Ghislaine Maxwell, as referenced in the recently declassified Justice Department files.
Over several years within Comfest General Planning Committee meetings, two partnered Comfest organizers since the 1970s and self-described “top moderators on Reddit” have encouraged fellow Comfesters to join Reddit. For example in a September 12th 2019 G.P.C. meeting, the minutes reflect that “Mimi recommends using Reddit as a discussion forum, it seems to be the only ‘news’ service that younger people subscribe to when seeking news. Mimi asks Bill to look into it.” And so I have.
Over several years, this author initially observed moderator over-reach, arbitrary post removals, comment removals and increasingly, censorship of Progressive foreign policy values on the subreddit forums specifically moderated by one or both of these two Comfest organizers, including: r/Ohio, r/inthenews and r/worldnews. The latter two forums – especially r/worldnews which has over four million weekly visitors – have been observed by this and hundreds of other Redditors to increasingly censor and tilt the discussion in benefit of the Eretz Israel narrative.
In January and February 2026, social media and particularly Reddit was abuzz regarding the release and declassification of the Justice Department files on Jeffrey Epstein. While thousands of these files referred to Ghislaine Maxwell, several files specifically associated Maxwell with the prolific Reddit moderator account maxwellhill, particularly:

Since the declassification of the Epstein files in early 2026, hundreds if not thousands of Redditors have decried the apparent decade-long moderation of r/worldnews, r/technology and more prominent subreddits by Ghislaine Maxwell, a.k.a. maxwellhill, Epstein’s most notorious associate who has been convicted and imprisoned for sex trafficking. In many documented cases, Redditors have been censored with related posts and comments filtered and removed by moderators for associating Maxwell with the maxwellhill account, as indicated in the Justice Dept. file EFTA01249192.
In February, this author decided to test this theory, and test the filters on local subreddits moderated by known Comfest organizers. On the primary subreddit for the state of Ohio reddit.com/r/Ohio with over 200,000 weekly visitors, the two Comfest organizers’ accounts represent exactly half / 50% of the moderator accounts that are actual real-life people, not bots or auto-mod apps.

In response to a February 2026 thread on r/Ohio titled: “Mods: F*ck off with the censorship,” I commented on the thread but it was locked from further commenting. I then commented on an r/Ohio thread titled: “Shame on any of us in Ohio if we vote for anyone in the Epstein files or take AIPAC money again” and my comment was deleted immediately.
I then posted two posts on r/Ohio and a third on r/columbus titled “Censorship of Progressive values from WorldNews to community activist events” and “Censorship of Progressive values from r/Ohio to the community festival.” All three posts on these local subreddits were immediately removed by Reddit moderator filters. Within the hour, this author’s Reddit account was banned from the platform.
The same evening in early February in my capacity as Comfest Entertainment Committee co-head, I emailed the contents of my deleted Reddit posts to the festival’s General Planning Committee:

Censorship of Progressive values from WorldNews to community activist events

Meanwhile, it largely remains a cesspool serving the same elitists as Jeff Ep, and Reddit Mod Ghislaine Maxwell when she moderated the same News forum(s), preventing free speech about human rights violations in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, etc.
Some people’s free speech is acceptable and rewarded. Others’ relevant discourse is deleted by moderator, or simply not permitted to begin with. For example, BDS peaceful protestors would never have a booth at the activists’ community festival; instead, BDS were referred to in planning meetings as domestic terrorists, as BDS’s peaceful protesting supported the ‘wrong’ narrative.
Ensuring no one can talk about A, B or C, especially human rights of Palestinians whose lives have rarely been worth more than a fingernail to them. Ensuring there is no narrative about A, B or C within the Media Comm. of a comm. org. that has rarely had an encompassing message. Ensuring there is largely no message, period, unless certain Reddit moderators can put their own names on all messaging including the festival’s annual logo. At the same time, published writers’ names are erased from their written word, maintaining their own names on logo and masthead, signifying nothing.
Ensuring that Progressive values on foreign policy, those values of Bernie Sanders, AOC & the Squad, are nowhere to be found at the activists’ community festival; aside from a few bold speakers they haven’t acknowledged a genocide since Cambodia and Rwanda.
Marked safe from attending certain community festival planning meetings that include Reddit mods who censor free speech and filled Ghislaine’s open Reddit Moderator position. The hypocrisy and conflict of interest is substantial and undeniable.

Additionally in February 2026, Comfest organizer u/AngelaMotorman affably commented in a TopMindsOfReddit thread which observed that Epstein’s Fortnite account had just been re-activated in Israel.

Nah — I heard he’s shacked up with “Maxwell Hill” somewhere in the UK.
EDIT: Unbelievable. Some clown saw this comment and actually thought it was serious. He sent the link to people I work with IRL (yes, this is stalking, but the clown is already banned sitewide) and told them it “proves” that I’m “covering” for Ghislaine Maxwell and the whole gang of ruling class pedophiles. In case anybody isn’t familiar with this psychodrama, here’s a good explication of it published six years ago by VICE.
Four months later in May 2026, the prominent progressive news publication Rawstory published an article titled: “’Actually insane’: Rumors fly that Ghislaine Maxwell leads online site from inside prison.” The article, published just last month, notes that “Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who’s currently serving a 20-year sentence in prison on sex-trafficking charges, may have been reinstated as a moderator for an influential online news forum, users of the online platform Reddit claimed Thursday.
“Back in 2020, speculation grew that a prominent Reddit user known as ‘u/maxwellhill’ was actually Maxwell. Evidence supporting the claim includes the timing of posts from the user lining up with Maxwell’s ‘public activities with an almost spooky accuracy,’ such as her mother’s passing. Furthermore, the user had not posted since Maxwell’s 2020 arrest, despite being active ‘nearly every day for 14 years.’ The Justice Department [DOJ] has also received numerous tips alleging the Reddit user to be Maxwell. Comments made by the user have appeared in documents seemingly produced by the FBI related to its investigations into Epstein, and a redacted email released by the agency includes evidence further supporting the claim, though the theory remains unverified.
“Reddit user ‘u/maxwellhill’ was documented by the Daily Dot back in 2014 to have joined Reddit in 2006 as ‘one of the first moderators’ of several influential Reddit communities, including ‘r/worldnews.’ Users of ‘r/Epstein’ discovered on Thursday that not only was ‘u/maxwellhill’ still listed as a moderator for ‘u/worldnews,’ but that she was listed as having joined the community as a moderator on July 2, 2025, suggesting the account had been reinstated as a curator for the online news forum.
“Also in 2025, Maxwell, after having been controversially transferred to a minimum-security prison in Texas, was given ‘special privileges’ while incarcerated, including access to computers, a ‘security risk not typically allowed,’ CNN reported.”
Why would two partnered septuagenerian Comfest organizers censor progressive values, and news about Epstein and moderator maxwellhill on Reddit while providing disinformation about both?
Since the forum’s inception both Comfester moderator accounts have amassed vast amounts of Reddit Gold, millions of Reddit Karma, and earned private audiences with Reddit’s CEO by participating in Mod World 2024 & 2025 to determine the future course of Reddit moderation. Through Reddit’s variation of cryptocurrency, these Comfesters receive compensation to moderate the website for their own personal gain.
Conclusion:
The fact that several senior Comfest organizers maintain professional relationships with city officials and police liaisons is necessary to produce the annual festival. The perception that Comfest has largely abandoned its original anti-war principles and unifying communal equality is amplified in an uncomfortable spotlight, when provided in the context of the Community Festival’s inextricable connections with Les Wexner and Jeffrey Epstein by way of the co-conspirator’s association with the festival’s longest and primary benefactor, OSU Hillel.
Instead of providing a disclaimer or clarity in Comfest’s 2026 Program Guide where the two Reddit moderators’ articles are prioritized rather than recognizing the hundreds of volunteers that actually make the festival possible, the Community Festival has seemingly doubled down on its potentially controversial associations.
- The Free Press Salon makes its return to Comfest at the Peace & Healing Pavilion for the first time since the pandemic – presumably led by the subject’s premier investigative reporter Bob Fitrakis; the “storytelling” agenda has already been filled on the Comfest schedule with otherwise relevant talking points of AI data centers under construction including Andruil

Does anyone remember when Comfest used to be anti-war and an actual progressive community festival? While the declassified files related to the Epstein scandal continue to released to the public, the tentacles of his illicit multifaceted trafficking and blackmail operation continue to be brought to light in unsettling proximity. In many circles and Venn diagrams of our lives, communities near and far are gradually raising their voices and their awareness of the impact on our local, national, and global landscape.
Statistics indicate that approximately one in three women, one in four men, and gendered, trans- and non-gendered people have experienced physical, emotional, or psychological abuse by an intimate partner. This abuse can manifest in various forms including physical violence, emotional manipulation, and psychological distress. The prevalence of such abuse highlights the need for awareness and support for survivors, emphasizing that abuse occurs in all genders and contexts. Shining light on long-hidden truths becomes self-evident when ensuring that justice prevails for the victims, and democracy does not die in darkness.
